The Keir Hardie Society held its first fringe event at the Scottish Labour Party Conference in Dundee on Friday 2nd March attracting a packed room.
The audience which included trade union officials, frontbench and backbench MSPs as well grassroots party members were treated to a historical account from guest speaker Gregg McClymont MP.
Society President Cathy Jamieson MP also gave a strong reminder that Keir Hardie’s beliefs and work still influence her and many others in their roles as Labour Politicians, and the importance of having his work at the heart of the movement.
The event was chaired by Nicky Wilson National President of the National Union of Mineworkers who was proud to honour Keir Hardie’s beginnings as a Mining Trade Unionist.
After the speeches there was an open debate in which a number of people spoke about future events for the society to promote Keir Hardie’s life and work.
The co-ordinating committee of the Keir Hardie Society will meet soon to begin preparations for their next events which will include a special event to commemorate the 156th anniversary of Hardie’s birth.
